Orcas Island, the largest island with 56 square miles (at high tide), has a population of about 3,800. Orcas Island is made up of hamlets and villages. On the western half of the island, Orcas Village, Westsound and Deer Harbor are all popular destinations. On the mountainous eastern half of the island, Olga is a charming hamlet including two restaurants, an art gallery and post office. The San Juans’ largest resort and spa is located in the Rosario area on beautiful Cascade Bay. Orcas Island offers a mild, four season climate. The Summer time is warm with temperatures ranging from 65 to 80 degrees. The sun is out approximately 247 days a year and 75% of the approximate 28″ inches of annual precipitation falls between November and March, about half of what falls in Seattle. The Winters are mild with average temperatures between 35 and 55 degrees.
The islands are reached by air or sea, and most commonly by the Washington State Ferries out of Anacortes where Pacific Crest Inspections is located. The ferries only stops at Orcas Village so most residents and tourists have to drive to designations on the island from there. Orcas is one of the four San Juan Islands served by the Washington State Ferry System. Terminals are located in Anacortes on the mainland, and Sydney, just outside of Victoria, B.C., on Vancouver Island.
The Orcas Island airport, located near Eastsound, has regular commuter flights as do seaplane bases near several of the major island resorts.
